StoryCircles

A chatroom-style game of collaborative story-telling

I created StoryCircles as a final project for an online web development class when I was just starting to get serious about learning to program. It’s not particularly representative of the kinds of things I work on now or would like to in the future, but I still think it’s kind of neat for what it is and I’m keeping a page for it here to mark where I started (at least for now).

It’s an online version of the game where players take turns contributing one word to a collaborative story, like I used to play with my friends in high school.

StoryCircles used to be available to demo on Heroku, but the services it used are not available for free anymore, and it doesn’t make sense for me to spend money to keep it up. Perhaps I’ll find a way to deploy it again in the future.

Notes

• Uses websockets to do real-time updates of players’ contributions to the story, like a chatroom.

• User profiles

• Story archive

• Waiting room for users to find stories to collaborate on

• Uses Django, Channels (for websocket functionality), and vanilla Javascript.
